- How Much Does Interior Design Cost in India? A Complete Detailed Breakdown
Most pricing guides online give you vague ranges and send you off to fill a form. This one won’t. Here’s what interior design really costs in India – broken down by project type, city, and scope – so you can plan before you even speak to a designer.
Interior design in India costs between ₹2,500 and ₹6,500+ per square foot for full execution (design + materials + labour), depending on the quality of materials, complexity of design, and city. Design consultation fees alone range from ₹30 to ₹800 per square foot.
But those numbers mean nothing without context.
How Interior Designers Actually Charge
There are four common models in India
- Per Square Foot (Most Common): A fixed rate per square foot of your carpet area.
- Design consultation only runs ₹30 – ₹600/sq. ft. Design + project management is ₹150 – ₹850/sq ft. Full turnkey (design + execution + materials) is ₹2,500 – ₹5,500+/sq ft.
- A 1,200 sq ft 3BHK at ₹2,500/sq ft comes to roughly ₹30 lakh.
- Percentage of Project Cost: 8% – 18% of the total project cost. Common for premium/Luxury projects.
- If your budget is ₹30 lakh, expect ₹2.4 – ₹5.4 lakh in design fees.
Flat Fee / Lump Sum: A fixed amount quoted after assessing your space
₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh depending on scope.
Hourly Rate: Rare in India. ₹500 – ₹5,000 per hour for one-time consultations.
What Actually Drives the Cost
- Materials (40% – 50% of any project): The same wardrobe can cost ₹60,000 or ₹2 lakh depending on whether you use commercial plywood with laminate or BWR plywood with a PU finish.
- Budget tier (₹2,500/sq ft) gets you MDF, basic laminates, standard hardware. Mid-range (₹3,300/sq ft) gets branded plywood, veneers, soft-close hardware. Premium (₹5,500+/sq ft) means marine plywood, solid wood, imported hardware, lacquer finishes.
- City: Mumbai and Delhi NCR are highest – labour alone is 20% – 30% more than tier-2 cities.
- Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad are slightly lower but catching up.
- Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh offer more affordable labour with good artisan networks.
- Smaller cities can deliver solid mid-range work at ₹2,000 – ₹3,000/sq ft.
- Scope: A designer quoting ₹80/sq ft might only give you a furniture layout and 3D renders.
- Another at ₹300/sq ft might handle everything from demolition to final styling.
- Always clarify what’s included.
